Critical Caribbean Studies at Rutgers became a Center!
Critical Caribbean Studies at Rutgers is now a Center! We are extremely happy to announce that CCS has become an official center within the Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences. We are now the Rutgers Advanced Institute for Critical Caribbean Studies. This transition is effective as of the 2015-2016 academic year. Stay tuned for more detailed information about our new status, our vision for the upcoming years, and several new CCS initiatives.
The fourth postdoctoral fellow in Critical Caribbean Studies is Jessica Swanston Baker
The fourth fellow in Critical Caribbean Studies is Jessica Swanston Baker, who recently defended her dissertation entitled ‘Where T’ings Start Is Not Where They End’: Popular Music and Decoloniality in St. Kitts and Nevis.” Jessica Baker completed her doctoral degree in Ethnomusicology at the Department of Music, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Baker will spend a research year at Rutgers, attending the CCA seminar on “Archipelagoes,” and she will offer a course in Latino and Hispanic Caribbean Studies in the Spring 2016.
Yolanda Martínez-San Miguel offered Professional Development Workshops
Yolanda Martínez-San Miguel (in collaboration with Ben. Sifuentes Jáuregui) offered Professional Development Workshops for K-12 Teachers on Cultural Competence in the classroom, with particular emphasis on Latino issues, at LEAP Academy, in Camden, New Jersey. Topics: "Latino Identity and Language," (December 6), "Latino Notions of Home" (May 9, 2014), and "Latino Gender and Sexuality" (June 13, 2014).
Professors Michelle Stephens and Yolanda Martínez San Miguel
Professors Michelle Stephens and Yolanda Martínez San Miguel will lead a year-long seminar hosted at the Center for Cultural Analysis entitled "Archipelagoes" during the 2015-2016 academic year. The seminar also includes participation from the following Critical Caribbean Studies affiliates: Carlos Decena, Elena Lahr-Vivaz, Laura Lomas, Kathleen López, Emanuel Martínez, Anjali Nerlekar, and Tashima Thomas.

Tatiana Flores served as the Adviser for the Getty Foundation for a funded exhibition Spirituality in the Art of the Caribbean. In preparation. Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, CA. September – December 2017.
Michelle Stephens
Michelle Stephens delivered the keynote address for the Eighth Annual Brooklyn College Graduate English Conference, “Transforming Knowledge/ Transforming Discourse: Trans Through Writing” held at Brooklyn College, on Friday May 8th, 2015. The title of her keynote address was “Trans-Caribbeanity and Transforming American Studies.”
