This lecture follows Catalina Lopez, her ancestors, and descendants through an interrogation of archival records and the tracing of intimate histories of motherhood, labor, disappearance, and femicide in the in the wake of abolition and US occupation in the northern coastal municipality of Vega Baja.

By illuminating the contours of Catalina's life and legacy, we glimpse the mangle (mangrove) that is Black Puerto Rican familial and national histories in the archipelago and the diaspora.
